Railways as Mode of Transport

Rail transport is an energy-efficient and capital-intensive means of mechanised land transport. Rails provide very smooth and hard surfaces on which the wheelsof the train may roll with minimal friction. As an example, a typical wagon can hold up to 125 tons of freight on two four-wheel bogies. Fully loaded, the contact between each wheel and the rail is the area of about one U.S. ten-cent piece. This can save energy compared with other forms of transportation, such as road transport.

Furthermore, the rails and sleepers distribute the train weight evenly, allowing significantly greater loads per axle or wheel than in road transport. This leads to lesswear and tear on the permanent way. Rail transport makes highly efficient use of space. A double-track railline can carry more passengers or freight in a given amount of time than a four-lane road. The main characteristic of rail transport involves its capability to join several units into trains. As a result, rail transport is a major form of public transport in many countries.

Awareness of environmental issues and research for greater safety give railways a new role within the transportation system. Methods of analysis have significantly evolved principally due to computer applications. Therefore, it becomes necessary to come up with a new scientific approach to engineering aspects of railways.

In a rapidly changing world, with increasing competition in all sectors of transportation, railways are restructuring their management and technology. Joint Stock Company Russian Railways is introducing new methods of organisation, and changing commercial and tariff policies. At the same time they are constructing new high-speed tracks and renewing all tracks. They are introducing high-comfort rolling stock vehicles and developing logistics and combined transport.
