Logistics

Logistics is the management of the flow of the goods, information and other resources between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet the requirements of customers. Logistics involves the integration of information, transportation, inventory, warehousing, material handling, and packaging, and occasionally security. Today the complexity of production logistics can be modeled, analyzed, visualized and optimized by plant simulation software. Logistics management is that part of the supply chain which plans, implements and controls the efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services and related information between the point of origin and the point of consumption in order to meet customer and legal requirements. A professional working in the field of logistics management is called a logistician. The main functions of a qualified logistician include inventory management, purchasing, transportation, warehousing, consultation and the organizing and planning of these activities.

1. What does logistics involve?

2. What is plant simulation software used for?

3. What requirements should logistics management meet?

4. What are the main functions of a logistician?

Road transport

A road is an identifiable route, way or path between two or more places. Roads are typically smoothed, paved, or otherwise prepared to allow easy travel. In urban areas, roads may pass through a city or village and be named as streets, serving a dual function as urban space easement and route.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one location to another. Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline, and space.

The most common road vehicle is the automobile; a wheeled passenger vehicle that carries its own motor. Other users of roads include buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Automobiles offer high flexibility, buses allow more efficient travel at the cost of reduced flexibility, but they are the main source of noise and air pollution in cities. Road transport by truck is often the initial and final stage of freight transport.

Transport plays an important part in economic growth and globalization, but most types cause air pollution and use large amounts of land.

1. What function do roads in urban areas have?

2. What modes of transportation can you name?

3. What users of roads do you know?

4. What is the main source of noise and pollution in cities?

Main transportation modes

You will consider different transport modes depending on the size and nature of the consignment, length of the trip and urgency of the shipment. In many cases multimodal carriage is necessary, such as a combination of air, road, sea and rail. This multimodal transportation has been facilitated by the use of standardized containers, which permits quick and efficient transfer of cargo from one carrier type to another.

The four main transportation modes each have their advantages and disadvantages. Airfreight is by far the quickest but can be costly for large consignments. Road haulage can offer door-to-door service over short distances. Rail can carry freight on a regular schedule, fairly unaffected by road congestion or weather conditions. Ships have a very high pay load capacity and offer large-scale and low-cost transportation over long distances.

To improve efficiency and to reduce transportation costs, freight with the same destination is grouped or consolidated.

1. What factors matter, when you consider different transport modes for the shipment of your cargo?

2. What are four main transportation modes?

3. What are the characteristics of four main transportation modes?

4. What can we do to improve efficiency of transportation?

Intermodal transportation

Intermodal transport is the combination of at least two modes of transport – by road, rail, sea or air – in a single transport chain. A ship or aircraft cannot back up to a store door, factory of warehouse, nor can a railroad wagon, so a truck or trailer picks up or delivers the freight of origin and destination. The use of interchangeable, unitized containers stimulates the easy flow of intermodal transport. Freight containers are locked and sealed at origin and the container are not disturbed until the seal is broken by the consignee when the freight is unloaded at the destination.

A common form of intermodal transport is unaccompanied delivery. The longest distance is covered by rail, whereas the distribution from the terminal to the final destination takes place by road. The lorry deposits the loading unit at the railway station and upon arrival by train the unit is picked up by a vehicle and travels to its final destination. In accompanied transport, entire lorries or articulated vehicles are transported by rail on special low-loader wagons. The drivers travel on the same train in a sleeping car.

We spread our growing freight load more efficiently when we use the traditional modes including rail, inland waterways and short-sea shipping transport.

1. What is intermodal transportation?

2. Why is it necessary?

3. What forms of intermodal transportation can you name?

4. What are traditional modes of transport?

Shipping

Shipping has multiple meanings. It can be a physical process of transporting commodities and merchandise goods and cargo, by land, air, and sea. It also can describe the movement of objects by ship.

Land or "ground" shipping can be by train or by truck. In air and sea shipments, ground transportation is required to take the cargo from its place of origin to the airport or seaport and then to its destination because it is not always possible to establish a production facility near ports due to limited coastlines of countries. Ground transportation is typically more affordable than air shipments, but more expensive than shipping by sea especially in developing countries, where inland infrastructure is not efficient.

Shipment of cargo by trucks, directly from the shipper's place to the destination, is known as a door to door shipment and more commonly multimodal transport system. Trucks and trains make deliveries to sea ports and air ports where cargo is moved in bulk.

1. What is shipping?

2. What kinds of land shipping can you name?

3. Why is ground transportation required in air and sea shipments?

4. What is “door to door” shipment?
