PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE

We form the present perfect simple with have / has + past participle

Affirmative                                                               Negative

I have

worked

come

  I have not

worked

come

you have   You have not

        we have you         they

Contractions

’ve = have              haven’t = have not

’s = has                   hasn’t = has not

2. Use

Sentences with the present perfect always connect the past and the present.

a) We use the present perfect to talk about something which started in the past and continues up to the present:

Kate and Ken have been married for 20 years. (= They are still married now).

She has worked in London for six moths. (= She still works in London now).

b) We also use the present perfect for things which have happened during a period of time that continues up to the present.

I’ve been to Africa and India (= in my life, up to now).

Have you ever eaten Chinese food? (= in your life, up to now).

We often use the present perfect in this way with “indefinite” time words

ever (at any time up to now),

never (at no time up to now),

yet, already, before.

What’s the best film you’ve ever seen?

       I’ve never seen a ghost.

       She’s been there before.

He hasn’t seen this film yet.

We use the present perfect with today, this morning, this afternoon, this week, this year, etc when these periods of time are not finished at the time of speaking.

I’ve written six letters this morning

       (It is still “this morning”).

c) We also use the present perfect, when the result of a past action is connected to the present.

The taxi has arrived. (= the taxi is now here.)

We’ve cleaned the flat. (= The flat is now clean).

We often use the present perfect in this way to announce “news”.

       I’ve found a new job.

We use for with the present perfect when we mention the length of the period; we use since when we mention the starting point of the period.
