Прошедшее длительное время

(The Past Continuous Tense)

Время Past Continuous обозначает действия, которые происходили или не происходили в точно указанное время в прошлом. Признаками этого времени являются: at 6 o'clock в 6 часов, when she саmе... когда она пришла, from 6 till 7 o'clock с 6 до 7 часов, the whole evening целый вечер, while в то время как, пока.

Время Past Continuous образуется: to be (was, were) + глагол + -ing.

We were watching TV yesterday at five. Мы смотрели телевизор вчера в пять.

Проанализируйте образование вопросительных и отрицательных предложений: When my mother came home, I was reading my book. Когда мама пришла домой, я читал книгу.

Were you reading your book when your mother came home? Ты читал свою книгу, когда мама пришла домой?

I was not reading my book when my mother came home. Я не читал книгу, когда мама пришла домой.

Обратите внимание на следующие предложения, не путайте употребление времен в них:

My mother came home at 6 о'clock yesterday.Моя мама пришла домой в шесть вчера. – В данном предложении употреблено время Past Simple,так как действие однократное.

My mother was cooking dinner at 6 yesterday.Мама готовила ужин в шесть. – В данном предложении употреблено время Past Continuous,так как действие было в процессе.

Past Continuous – это не время, которое выражает действия, которые долго протекают, – это время, которое выражает действия, протекающие в точно указанный момент. Поэтому неверно будет сказать:

She was traveling for a long time.Она путешествовала долгое время.

She was studying in London for three years. Она училась в Лондоне в течение трех лет.

В данных предложениях необходимо употребить время Past Simple,
т. е. предложения будут звучать следующим образом:


She traveled for a long time.

She studied in London for three years.
