Alimentary tract is a digestive system.

The alimentary canal (also known as the digestive tract) is the system of organs within human being that takes in food, digests it to extract energy and nutrients, and expels the remaining waste. The major functions of the alimentary tract are ingestion, digestion, absorption, and defecation. The alimentary tract is a musculomembraneous canal. In a normal human adult male, the alimentary tract is approximately 6.5 meters long and consists of the upper and lower alimentary tracts. It extends from the oral cavity to the anus. The upper alimentary tract consists of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and stomach. The lower part of the alimentary tract comprises the intestines and anus. From the mouth food passes through the pharynx to the esophagus and then to the stomach. Important structures of the mouth are the teeth and the tongue, which is the organ of the taste. The stomach is a dilated portion of the alimentary canal. It has a capacity of from 2.14 to 4.28 litres. The small intestine is a thin-walled muscular tube about 6.5 metres long. The small intestine is composed of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The large intestine is about 1.5 metres long. It is divided into caecum, colon, sigmoid and rectum. Accessory organs to the alimentary canal include the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.

21. Duties of the doctors and nurses at the in-patient department.

When the patients are admitted to the hospital they are received by a nurse on duty at the reception ward. The nurse on duty fills in patients’ case histories in which she writes down their name, age, place of work and other information about the patients. Also the nurses take the patient’s temperature, give them different injections, take stomach juice for analysis, give all the prescribed remedies in the doses indicated by the ward doctors. And a doctor on duty examines the patients and gives his instructions what department and what ward the patients are to be admitted to. And doctors on duty examine the patients. After this examination they administer the patients different procedures. Also ward doctors must fill in the patient’s case history. It includes the family history, the past history (information about the diseases which the patient had both being a child and an adult), the history of the present illness (the information on the physical examination of the patient on his admission to the hospital, the results of all the laboratory tests).

Departments at the chemist’s.

In a large chemist’s there are usually 2 departments. They are a chemist’s department and a prescription department. At the chemist’s department a patients can have the necessary medicine immediately, they are already prepared. And at the prescription department the patients can order necessary drug. When the patient comes to the prescription department he must have a recipe from his attending doctor. Without this recipe chemist can not give the patient necessary drugs. At any chemist’s all the drugs are kept in drug cabinets. And every medicine has label on it. These labels are white, yellow and blue. White labels indicate drugs for internal use, yellow – for external use and blue – for injections.  Also on labels there are names of medicine and dosage. Before using the medicine the patient must know well that he is taking the proper drug and in the necessary dosage.
