The main data source used by ATA is deep packet inspection of the network traffic to and from your domain controllers. For ATA to see the network traffic, you must either configure port mirroring, or use a Network TAP.

For port mirroring, configure port mirroring for each domain controller to be monitored, as the source of the network traffic. Typically, you will need to work with the networking or virtualization team to configure port mirroring. For more information, refer to your vendor's documentation.

Your domain controllers and ATA Gateways can be either physical or virtual. The following are common methods for port mirroring and some considerations. Refer to your switch or virtualization server product documentation for additional information. Your switch manufacturer might use different terminology.

Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) – Copies network traffic from one or more switch ports to another switch port on the same switch. Both the ATA Gateway and domain controllers must be connected to the same physical switch.

Big Data is an emerging hot topic as human beings are generating data in an explosive fashion. Big Data possesses profound information of our society, therefore, it impacts numerous aspects of human society, such as government, finance, security and so on. Big Data is usually so large and complex, which is far beyond the capacity of the existing database management tools or traditional data processing applications. Currently, most of the work on Big Data is focusing on business, application and information processing level, such as data mining and analysis. However, Big Data definitely and desperately desires the support from networking aspect, especially when real time or near real time applications are demanded. For example, the storage of Big Data must depend on distributed systems and mechanisms. Therefore, it involves issues of network performance, topology, security, privacy and so on.

We have seen significant effort in networking aspects of Big Data. There are an extensive effort in building both hardware and software platforms for Big Data, such as Clouds and MapReduce.

With the rapid accumulation of new users to the cloud services and the surge in the number of applications hosted on the cloud, the existing data center architectures cannot cope with the black-box nature of the cloud nor with Big Data analytics. Current data center networks, using electrical packet switches, have many limitations, such as excessive traffic, congested networks, and the amount of power consumption. In “A Hybrid Data Center Architecture for Big Data”, Rahman and Esmailpour propose a hybrid network architecture for data centers that involves adding optical interconnections to the infrastructure, offering high throughput, low latency, and incredibly low energy consumption compared with the existing architectures. The proposed solution is based on a bottom-to-top hierarchical electrical and optical architecture that provides elastic bandwidth requirement at server level. The results show that hybrid architecture provides a viable solution to data center issues and it outperforms existing data center architectures.

In “A Cloud Computing Based Network Monitoring and Threat Detection System for Critical Infrastructures”, Chen et al. proposed a cloud computing-based network monitoring and threat detection system to secure critical infrastructure systems. In the developed system, both Hadoop MapReduce and Spark were leveraged to speed up data processing by separating and processing data streams concurrently. The effectiveness of the developed system with respect to network monitoring, threat detection, and system performance were evaluated. Experimental results show that the proposed system could help the system administrator to monitor network activities and identify abnormal behaviours.

Yang et al., in their paper “SFPM: A Secure and Fine-Grained Privacy-Preserving Matching Protocol for Mobile Social Networking”, focused on studying a kind of very popular location-based applications, called proximity-based friend recommendation (PFR), which belongs to the Big Data analytics in mobile social networking.
