Существительное

Именем существительным называется часть речи, которая обозначает предмет и отвечает на вопросы: кто? что?

Образование множественного числа существительных

а) Множественное число образуется путем добавления окончания -s:

catcats(кот коты)

filmfilms(фильм фильмы)

б) Если имя существительное оканчивается на буквы -ch, -s, -ss, -sh,
-x, -z, то множественное число образуется при помощи окончания -es:

boxboxes(коробка коробки)

в) Если существительное оканчивается на согласную , то оно заменяется на i+ es:

citycities(город города)

partyparties(вечеринка вечеринки)

г) При образовании множественного числа, слова, которые оканчиваются на букву -f, изменят ее на -v:

leafleaves(лист листья),wifewives(жена жены).

a footfeet (стопастопы)

д) Следующие существительные в английском языке употребляются только в единственном числе:

news(новость новости),advice(совет советы),knowledge(знание знания).

е) Следующие существительные имеют одинаковую форму в единственном и множественном числе:

a sheepsheep(овца овцы), a deer – deer (оленьолени).

Притяжательный и родительный падежи

В словосочетании my friend's pen ручка моего друга (моего друга ручка) используется притяжательный падеж, то же самое можно выразить в родительном падеже, который отвечает на вопросы: кого? чего? – the penof my friend ручка моего друга (ручка кого? друга).

При использовании родительного падежа перед первым существительным всегда употребляется определенный артикль.

Сравните два предложения и обратите внимание на местонахождение апострофа в данных предложениях.

The boy's rooms are big.Комнаты мальчика большие.

The boys' rooms are big.Комнаты мальчиков большие.

Притяжательный падеж чаще употребляется с одушевленными, а родительный падеж – с неодушевленными существительными.
