THE RANGE OF COMPUTERS

There are computers capable of solving difficult scientific and economic problems at the rate of hundreds of millions of operations a second, for example, the Elbrus series. The Elbrus I was introduced in 1980. If we try to compare it with man's memory it appears that the Elbrus I can store as much as ten clever men.

The Elbrus II was next in the family of supercomputers. It can compute ten times as fast as its "brother". There are few computers of such speed in the world. They are needed for particularly complex problems.

Today programming has become a very important branch of the national economy. For example, a group of experts works for several years to develop a computer program for meteorology.

Supercomputers are usually multiprocessor computers. The idea of designing multiprocessor computers was first given by the Soviet scientists in 1974 at a congress in Stockholm. The speed of computation makes it possible for the computer to forecast weather and also forecast complications of a patient after an operation, determine the conditions of flying a plane and solve many oilier problems.

ANALOGUE COMPUTERS

What is analogue computer? The dictionary says that "analog" means an agreement or correspondence in certain respects between things otherwise different. In analogue computers the agreement is a mathematical one. In other words, two entirely different things can be shown to have a likeness by the mathematical equations which define their movements or states.

To take a practical case, think of a pipe through which water is flowing, the pressure being applied by a pump at one end of the pipe. The water will flow through the pipe at a speed which depends on the shape of the pipe, the internal roughness of the pipe, and the pressure which is being applied by the pump. Similarly, a wire through which electricity is flowing as a result of a voltage applied to its outer ends will have current flowing through it which depends on the texture and size of the wire and the pressure of the voltage. Voltage, as you know, is electrical pressure.
