– Galvanometersare knownto be used for detecting the presence of an electric current in any circuit and for determining its direction and relative strength. – They believetheir constructionto be based on two principles. – According to these principles of action galvanometersare foundto be divided into two classes: first, those in which the magnet or magnetized bodyisarranged to move and the coil held stationary, and second, those in whichthe magnet is stationary and the coilisarranged to move. – Each classprovesto be constructedin a variety of forms. – The deflectionsare supposedto be notedeither by a pointer attached to the system and moving over a graduated scale, or by a small mirror attached to the system.
Task № 5. Read the text and answer the questions in the written form
1. What are electric quantities measured by? – We measure directly the quantity of certain factors such as current, voltage, resistance. 2. What instruments constitute the largest group of the meters? – Indicating instruments constitute the largest group of the meters. 3.What principle do they operate on? – They operate on the principle that a coil may be so placed in a magnetic field that it will tend to turn when a current flows in it. 4. What is the main principle of a meter? – A meter is considered to be a small electric motor. 5. What instruments are used for everyday measurements? – For everyday measurements indicating instruments are believed to be most convenient. 6. What are the main parts of an indicating instrument? – They are expected to have three essential parts: an operating mechanism, a controlling mechanism and damping mechanism. 7. Which instrument is the most useful? – The moving coil instrument is found to be the most useful instrument. 8. What is the principle of operation of a moving-coil instrument? – The principle on which it operates is that the force on a conductor in a magnetic field depends upon the current in the conductor. 9. What does the permanent magnet provide? – The magnetic field is provided by a small permanent magnet. 10. What is placed in the magnetic field of the permanent magnet? – A current-carrying coil is placed in the magnetic field of the permanent magnet. 11. What is produced when a current passes through the coil? – When a current passes through the coil, an electromagnet is produced. 12. What moves the coil and the pointer? – The poles of the electromagnet are attracted by the poles of the permanent magnet and this moves the coil and the pointer.
