Britannia and the Beat¹

The emergence of the beat group as a symbol of new, young, swinging Britain is one of the most exciting developments in the history of the popular arts in the twentieth century.

The teenagers² not only in England but in other countries show no sign of losing their affection for the Beatles, Stones, Animals, Hermits, Troggs, Hollies, Beach Boys, Supremes³ and all the other groups.

One thing which distinguishes today's beat from early pop music is the pre - sent emphasis on group playing.

The British beat music was first heard in the gloomy streets of Liverpool inhabited by dockers. And in the days of Britain's rise to fame in the pop world, the Beatles and other groups indeed came from Liverpool. The British artists liked to copy the American style, which had appeared after the war and continued into the early days of Elvis Presley⁴. Certain British entertainers attracted legions of fans. It was in the pre-Beatles days. Then Liverpool as the city finally caught the public's imagination. The Cave (a club where the Beatles performed) became popular with the vast teenage population.

The Beatles were only one of the many groups playing in Liverpool at the time then began to make a reputation Now, without counting the top stars, the number of beat groups in England must run into tens of thousands. Among these, a few full-time professionals with excellent sound equipment who may be well known in their own region and able to make a fairly good living; some may do to go abroad, where they can often get much greater fees than they would get at home; others are purely amateur.
