The Role Of Periodicals In Our Life

We can’t imagine our life without newspapers and magazines. They play a great and very important role in the life of modern man. There is practically no family that does not receive one or two newspapers and magazines. Reading a newspaper you can get information about the work of the government, the events that have taken or are going to take place in our country and abroad. You can also read articles on economy, industry and agriculture, about historical events and public figures of the past. Sports-fans can read about sport events. Practically all newspapers give radio and TV programmes, weather forecasts.

There are many kinds of newspapers and magazines in our country. At first, there are daily newspapers such as Komsomolskaya Pravda, Izvestia, and weekly newspapers and among them there are Argumenti i Fakti, Literaturnaya Gazeta.

At second, there are the ‘popular’ papers and the ‘quality’ papers. The popular papers are smaller in size with lots of pictures, big headlines and short articles. They are easy to read and often contain little real information; sometimes they give more space to opinions than to news. They usually publish stories about ordinary people because they are amusing or odd.

‘Quality’ papers are for the more serious readers, who want to read about politics and foreign affairs. These papers are bigger in size with longer articles. They have different pages for home news, foreign affairs, feature articles, fashion, business, sport and so on.

At third, there are central and local newspapers. Most of the papers have a political viewpoint.

One can find newspapers and magazines for children and teenagers, for sports- fans and for people who are interested in science and culture. Everyone has his favourite newspaper. But I like Komsomolskaya Pravda best of all. This newspaper was published on the 5th of October, 1930 for the first time. The newspaper contains current news, articles about home and international affairs, articles on economic life and culture, TV shows. You also find a lot of advertisements on the pages of the paper and use them. If you are fond of sports, you can read articles about sport events in our country and in others. There are also articles about famous sportsmen there. I don’t usually read all the articles in Komsomolskaya Pravda. At first, I look through each page in the paper and then choose the articles I’m interested in. I like to read this paper, for it touches upon different problems. I think it is worth reading.
