THE ADJECTIVE

Имя прилагательное – часть речи, которая обозначает признак предмета и отвечает на вопрос what? (какой?): large, interesting.

Английские прилагательные не изменяются по родам, числам и падежам. По составу они делятся на простые (big, short), производные (natural, incorrect, unusual) и сложные (dark-blue, snow-white, a five-year-old boy, a two day seminar, a fifteen mile road).

К наиболее производным суффиксам прилагательных относятся:

-ful: useful careful; -less: helpless, useless; -able, -ible: eatable, accessible; -ous: famous, dangerous; -al: formal, central; -ed: bored, excited; -ing: boring, interesting; -ic: geographic, -ish: Swedish, longish.

К наиболее распространенным префиксам прилагательных относятся: un-: unhappy, untrue; in-: incomplete, indifferent.

Прилагательные употребляются: 1) перед существительным      (a beautiful song); 2) после глаголов-связок to be, to seem, to get, to become, to turn как именная часть составного сказуемого: She is nice. It is getting dark. He became rich; 3) после неопределённого местоимения: I have something interesting; 4) после смысловых глаголов to sound, to look, to appear, to taste, to feel, to smell: That sounds pleasant. She looks tired. The problem appeared impossible.

Если имеется несколько определений, выраженных прилагательными, то они располагаются в следующем порядке:         1) эпитет, качество (famous, good); 2) размер (big, small); 3) форма (round, square); 4) возраст (old, new); 5) цвет (white, yellow);                 6) происхождение (Chinese; German); 7) вещество, материал (glass, wooden); 8) определения, образующие с существительным единую смысловую группу (medical, educational).
