Higher Education in the USA

In the United States a student who has finished high school may want to continue in higher education. There are several ways to do it: universities, colleges, community colleges, and technical or vocational schools.

A university in the United States usually has several different colleges in it. Each has a special subject area. There may be a college of liberal arts where humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics are taught. There may be a college of education and a college of business. A program for undergraduates usually takes four years. University students get an undergraduate degree in the arts or sciences. If they complete a course of study they get Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. Students may leave the university at this time. They may also go on for a graduate or professional degree. The university always has programs for graduate and professional study in many subjects.

College students usually spend four years at school, too. A college does not have graduate or professional programs. If a college student completes a course of study in arts or science, he or she gets Bachelor of Arts or Science degree. If college students want to continue for a graduate or professional degree, they must go to University. The college is usually funded in one of the three ways already described.

The program of study in the community college usually lasts two years. Not all of the subjects taught there are the usual school subjects. The community college may give courses in the regular academic subjects or subjects like dental technology, sewing and other non-academic subjects. Not all students of the community college have a high school diploma. They may then go to a college for two more years to get the bachelor's degree. Community colleges are nearly always publicly funded.

The technical or vocational school has only job training, it has no academic program. Students may have a high school diploma, or not. Programs may take from six months to two years and more. The technical or vocational school gives training for work in areas such as electronics, carpentry and others.

Prom traditions

Prom is a ton of fun no matter where you go to school – the music, the dancing, the dresses – but every school has different ways of celebrating the big night. Here are all the weirdest things students do for prom across the country.

1. Post-prom party. Some schools will host a party after prom with food and fun activities. Most are optional, but at some schools attendance is mandatory. "We had after-prom where the school forced us to play laser tag and bounce on a bouncy house right after prom until 5 a.m. so no one went out and drank,"

2. Mock accident performances. To prevent car accidents that sometimes happen during prom weekend, Monroe Woodbury High School in NY hosts a "mock accident" performance every year to scare students away from drinking and driving. The performance is equipped with flipped cars, fake blood, and students playing accident victims. It's pretty creepy tbh.

3. Skipping school the day of prom. Some schools have prom on a Friday and kids will dip out on classes that day. It's totally understandable, because how are you supposed to get ready for prom if you don't have an entire day??

5. Prom weekend. After prom night – or sometimes right after prom – students in New Jersey will skip town with their whole squad and head to The Shore. They'll go on a fun weekend trip to celebrate the end of the school year. Groups of students will rent a hotel room or a house and hang out at the beach.

6. Wearing your date's tie.Guys will give their dates their ties to wear – after pictures, of course. Unlike garters, the girls usually have to give them back at the end of the night, so they can be returned to the suit rental store.

8. Drawing your prom date from a hat.Students at Aquin High School from Freeport, IL participate in a date-picking tradition that's almost 90 years old, called Prom Draw. The girls are dressed in disguise for the skits, then the boys ask them and they must say yes. Prom Draw was started in the 1920s in order to include local kids from the orphanage in the prom fun. The students vote every year on whether to keep the tradition alive.

Court and Trial

What is a Court?

A court is formally referred to as an organized body with powers, meeting at specified times and places for the adjudication of causes and other issues brought before it. It is typically known as the branch of government that is entrusted with the administration of justice. A court or the system of courts is established or created by statute or provisions in the Constitution. The function of a court involves the hearing of cases, interpreting and applying the relevant law, and coming to a decision based on the evidence presented before it. Further, it is composed of judges and in some cases a judge and a jury. Courts are typically categorized into civil and criminal courts and there are rules and procedures that govern the function and process of each type of court.

What is a Trial?

Think of a trial as a process or proceeding that takes place within a court. Thus, a trial is heard before the judicial body alluded to above. The dictionary defines Trial as the act or process of testing, trying or putting to the proof. In the legal sense, this is exactly what happens in a trial. In law, a trial is defined as a judicial examination and determination of facts and legal issues between parties to a lawsuit. A trial is the primary mode by which disputes are resolved, particularly when the parties are unable to reach a settlement on their own. The ultimate objective of a trial is to deliver a fair and impartial decision. Trials are typically instituted before a judge or before a judge and jury. Trials can be either civil Trials or criminal Trials. In a civil trial, the objective is to determine if the plaintiff is entitled to claim the relief sought. On the other hand, in a criminal Trial, the goal is to determine the defendant‘s guilt or innocence.

What is the difference between Court and Trial?

• A court refers to a judicial body established to hear and determine cases between parties.

• A trial, in contrast, is the process by which cases are brought and heard before a Court.

• The ultimate goal of the court is to administer justice and enforce the law.

• In a trial, however, the ultimate goal is dispute resolution or the determination of a person’s guilt or innocence.

Crime prevention

Crime prevention is the process of trying to reduce the amount of crime in a given area. It might involve increasing the amount of security in certain places or trying to improve impoverished neighborhoods. Educating citizens could also be a part of this initiative. Trying to get the public involved in observing the happenings and reporting them to police is typically another aspect of crime prevention.

Some jurisdictions feel that adding more police officers to a particular area can aid in public safety. This is because criminals may not feel comfortable committing crimes if they are afraid they might get caught. Having security officers patrol businesses, apartment complexes, and city parks is generally another form of crime prevention.

Many people feel that the condition of a particular neighborhood plays a part in the amount of crime committed there. For this reason, there are many groups that work to fix up buildings in areas that may have previously been neglected. This could involve making repairs to buildings, cutting down weeds, and cleaning up trash. It might also include making improvements to streets and sidewalks as well as adding curbside lighting. Painting or removing graffiti from public buildings is often also done to clean up the area.

Education can be another element of crime prevention. Many times, those who drop out of school can easily be persuaded to join gangs or abuse drugs. Convincing youth to remain in school and receive an education could eliminate this vulnerability and consequently reduce the possibility of young people going to jail in the future.

Another way that education works as a tool for crime prevention is by trying to prevent certain behaviors in the first place. This could be drinking and driving for example. A special interest group may run an ad campaign on radio, television, or billboards in order to attempt to stop people from performing criminal acts.

Criminal activity affects people mentally, economically, physically, and socially. This can mean that preventing the occurrence of crime can benefit society by reducing the number of victims as well as the amount of assistance people need.
