Посібник до самостійної роботи студентів з «Іноземної мови» призначений для студентів ΙІ курсу спеціальностей:

5.03050401 «Економіка підприємства»

(VI семестр навчання) і має на меті допомогти студентам у закріпленні лексичних, граматичних навичок, а також у розвитку умінь роботи з текстами.

Мета посібника до самостійної роботи з предмету «Іноземна мова» – активізувати вивчення лексики, граматики за допомогою різноманітних лексичних, граматичних, вправ, а також вправ на переклад, які допоможуть студентам в оволодінні текстами іноземною мовою, а також сприятимуть розширенню соціокультурної компетенції студентів.

What’s happening to our envinment?

       Many people believe that the way we live our lives today is having a very damaging effect on the environment. Here are some examples of the kinds of problems we face, followed by some things that we can do to help protect our environment.

       The greenhouse effect. Pollution from cars, factories and power stations is causing harmful greenhouse gases to build up in the Earth’s atmosphere. These gases prevent heat from escaping, and as a result our planet is getting warmer. This process is known as global warming.

       Global warming is causing the ice at the North and South Poles to melt and sea levels and sea temperatures to rise, leading to serious flooding and violent storms in many parts of the world. In other places, there will be less rain and the land will be turned into desert.

Pollution. The biggest polluter today is the car. Exhaust fumes are the main cause of poor air quality, which can make people feel ill and have difficulty in breathing. This problem is especially bad in cities, where the number of cars is increasing every year, causing serious congestion and filling the air with smog. Governments try to improve the situation by encouraging people to use their cars less or buy cars that do not use as much fuel.

All over the world, wildlife habitats are being destroyed. There are many endangered species that could soon become extinct. Rainforests are being cut down so that people can grow crops and feed the world’s increasing population. Modern farming methods, for example using pesticides and genetically modified crops, are having a very bad effect on the food chain. Killing insects may be useful for growing crops, but it reduces the amount of available food for other animals and birds.                                     

       Climate changeis also making conditions difficult for some animals. In the Arctic, the ice is melting, threatening the survival of animals such as polar bears.

Translate the text:

There is a nice holiday for children and teenagers in Great Britain and America – Halloween. It’s on the 31 (thirty-first) of October. In the evening boys and girls put on different old and funny clothes. People put pumpkins on the window-sills. They cut out eyes, noses and mouths on the pumpkins and put candles into them. So the pumpkin looks like a face.

“Halloween” means “holy evening” – the evening before the Christian holy day of All Saint’s Day. But it is even older than Christianity. Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France lived the Celts. They celebrated their New Year on the first of November. People believed that on the thirty-first of October ghosts of dead people came back. To scare the ghosts people dressed like devils and were very noisy.

At night on October, 31st witches fly on their broomsticks, you can see ghosts, Jack-O’-Lanterns walk around houses, black cats play tricks with us.

The symbol of Halloween is a pumpkin, which is called Jack-O’-Lantern. A burning candle is put inside. Black and orange are the traditional Halloween colours.

The Irish legend says that there lived the man whose name was Jack. He had played jokes on devil and could not enter the hell. He could not enter the heaven because he was a miser. He begged the devil for a coal to light his way out of the dark. He put the coal in a turnip and is still wondering around earth with his lantern.

A pumpkin is a very large orange fruit that grows on the ground. It is tasty. You can make a pumpkin pie. It has no fat. It has a lot of protein. It has tasty seeds inside.

Millions people all over the world spend their holidays travelling. They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns, they travel to enjoy picturesque places or just for a change of scene. It's always interesting to discover new things and different ways of life, to meet different people, to try different food, to listen to different music. Those who live in the country like to go to a big city and spend their time visiting museums and art galleries, looking at shop windows and dining at exotic restaurants. City residents usually like a quiet holiday by the sea and in the mountains with nothing to do but walk and bathe and lay in the sun. Most travelers and holiday-makers take a camera with them and take pictures of everything that interest them - the sights of a city, old churches and castles, views of mountains, lakes, valleys, plains, waterfalls, forests, different kinds of trees, flowers and plants, animals and birds. Later, perhaps years later, they will be reminded by the photos of the happy time they had. People travel by train, by plane, by ship or boat and by car. All means of travel have their advantages and disadvantages. And people choose one according to their plans and preferences. The fasters way of travelling - is travelling by plane, but in my opinion the most comfortable is travelling by ship and the cheapest is travelling on foot. If we are fond of travelling, we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home, though we may read about them in books and newspapers and see pictures of them on TV. The best way to study geography is to travel and the best way to get to know and understand the people is to meet them in their own homes. Nowadays people mostly travel by air, as it's the fastest means of travelling. Passengers are requested to arrive at the airport 2 hours before departure time on international flights and an hour on domestic flights, as there must be enough time to complete the necessary airport formalities. Before passengers get on board the plane, they have to register their luggage. Each passenger is given a boarding pass to be shown at the departure gate and again to the stewardess when boarding the plane. Landing formalities and custom regulations are more or less the same in all countries: while still on board the plane the passengers are given arrival cards to fill in. After the passengers have disembarked, officials will check his passport and visa. Then the passengers go to the custom for an examination of their luggage. As a rule personal belongings may be brought in duty-free. In some cases the custom inspector may ask you to open your bag for inspection.

Mr. Campbell and Mr. Robertson walk into the departure lounge where they have a parting chat.

Announcer's voice: " Trans - Airlines passengers to London on Flight TWA 123 (one - two - three). This flight is now boarding at gate number 2. Passengers on Flight TWA 123 please proceed to gate N° 2.

Mr. Campbell and Mr. Robertson say "Good bye" to each other and shake hands. Mr. Robertson wishes Mr. Campbell a happy journey and part.

Stewardess: May I have your seat number? It is given in you boarding pass.

Mr. Campbell: Here you are.

S.: This way, please. Your seat is over there - third row on the right,next to the porthole. You may put your hat and raincoat on the rack.

S. ( to passengers ) : Ladies and gentlemen, please fasten your seatbelts and refrain from smoking.

The stewardess passes down the plane with a tray offering sweets tothe passengers.

S. ( To Campbell) : here you are, sir. It's good to have something tochew when the plane starts climbing: it takes the strain off your ears.

C.: Thank you. At what altitude are we going to fly?

S.: The altitude will be about twenty five thousand feet.

C.: And what number of newspapers and magazines. They are overthere, in the very front of the compartment.

Some hours later.

S.: How are you? Quite comfortable? Enjoying the flight?

C.: Yes, thanks. When do we get to London?

 S.: We should touch down shortly after three, very soon now.Before landing?

Stars are often used as symbols for classification purposes. They are used by reviewers for ranking things such as movies, TV shows, restaurants, and hotels. For example, one to five stars is commonly employed to categorize hotels.

The star classification system is a common one for rating hotels. Higher star ratings indicate more luxury.

The AAA and their affiliated bodies use diamonds instead of stars to express hotel and restaurant ratings levels.

Hotels are independently assessed in traditional systems and rest heavily on the facilities provided. Some consider this disadvantageous to smaller hotels whose quality of accommodation could fall into one class but the lack of an item such as an elevator would prevent it from reaching a higher categorization.

In recent years hotel rating systems have also been criticised by some who argue that the rating criteria for such systems are overly complex and difficult for laypersons to understand. It has been suggested that the lack of a unified global system for rating hotels may also undermine the usability of such schemes.

Food services, entertainment, view, room variations such as size and additional amenities, spas and fitness centers, ease of access and location may be considered in establishing a standard.

The more common classification systems include 'star' rating, letter grading, from 'A' to 'F', diamond or simply a 'satisfactory' or 'unsatisfactory' footnote to accommodation such as hostels and motels. Systems using terms such as Deluxe/ Luxury, First Class/ Superior, Tourist Class/ Standard, and Budget Class/ Economy are more widely accepted as hotel types, rather than hotel standards.

Some countries have rating by a single public standard - Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Hungary have laws defining the hotel rating. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the rating is defined by the respective hotel industry association using a 5-star system - the German classifications are Tourist (*), Standard (**), Comfort (***), First Class (****) and Luxury (*****) with the mark Superior to flag extras beyond the minimum defined in the standard. The Swiss hotel rating was the first non-government formal hotel classification beginning in 1979. It did influence the hotel classification in Austria and Germany. The formal hotel classification of the DEHOGA (German Hotel and Restaurant Association) started on 1. August 1996 and proved very successful (with 80% of guests citing the hotel stars as the main criteria in hotel selection) which lead to the creation of a common European Hotelstars rating system that started in 2010 (see below).

In France, the rating is defined by the public tourist board of the department using a four star system (plus "L" for Luxus) which has changed to a 5-star system from 2009 on. In South Africa and Namibia, the Tourist Grading Council of South Africa has strict rules for a hotel types granting up to 5 stars.

Superior Tourist       The Superior flag is provided when the additional service and accommodation provisions are not sufficient for the next Hotelstar. The bathroom facilities are usually at the same level as for two stars hotels but built from cheaper materials. The cost for regular inspection by independent associations is waived as well.

Standard      In addition to the single star (*) hotels: - Breakfast buffet - Reading light next to the bed - Bath essence or shower gel - * Bath towels - Linen shelves - Offer of sanitary products (e.g. toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit) - Credit Cards

Superior Standard    The Superior flag is provided when the additional service and accommodation provisions are not sufficient for the next Hotelstar. The Standard-Superior does usually offer the same service level as three star hotels but the interiors of the hotel are smaller and cheaper so that the three stars were not to be awarded by the inspection body. A two star superior does not require mystery guesting.

Comfort In addition to the standard star (**) hotels: - Reception opened 14 hours, accessible by phone 24 hours from inside and outside, bilingual staff (e.g. German/English) - Three piece suite at the reception, luggage service - Beverage offer in the room - Telephone in the room - Internet access in the room or in the public area - Heating facility in the bathroom, hair-dryer, cleansing tissue - Dressing mirror, place to put the luggage/suitcase - Sewing kit, shoe polish utensils, laundry and ironing service - Additional pillow and additional blanket on demand - Systematic complaint management system

First Class In addition to the comfort star (***) hotels: - Reception opened 18 hours, accessible by phone 24 hours from inside and outside - Lobby with seats and beverage service - Breakfast buffet or breakfast menu card via room service - Minibar or 24 hours beverages via room service - Upholstered chair/couch with side table - Bath robe and slippers on demand - Cosmetic products (e.g. shower cap, nail file, cotton swabs), vanity mirror, tray of a large scale in the bathroom) - Internet access and internet terminal - "À la carte"-restaurant

First Class Superior     The Superior flag is provided when the first class hotel has a proven high quality not only in the rooms. The superior hotels provide for additional facilities in the hotel like a sauna or a workout room. The quality is checked regularly by mystery guesting of an external inspection service.

Luxury In addition to the first class (****) hotels: - Reception opened 24 hours, multilingual staff - Doorman-service or valet parking - Concierge, page boy - Spacious reception hall with several seats and beverage service - Personalized greeting for each guest with fresh flowers or a present in the room - Minibar and food and beverage offer via room service during 24 hours - Personal care products in flacons - Internet-PC in the room - Safe in the room - Ironing service (return within 1 h), shoe polish service - Turndown service in the evening - Mystery guesting

Superior Luxury The Luxury star hotels need to attain high expectations of an international guest service. The Superior Luxury star is only awarded with a system of intensive guest care.
